Maieutic Facilitation

Maieutic Facilitation is a process that enables groups to work together effectively and productively, achieving concrete results in the shortest possible time. Instead of offering direct answers, the facilitator uses open-ended questions to help participants explore their beliefs, assumptions, and reasoning. This approach encourages individuals to reflect, challenge their ideas, and uncover underlying truths or contradictions. Through a dialectical process of actions and iterations, participants deepen their understanding, refine their thinking, and collaboratively identify a clear roadmap to achieve their goals. The facilitator guides the group through decision-making, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to share their perspectives and contribute to the common objective.

In what contexts is Maieutic Facilitation used?

Maieutic Facilitation can be applied in various settings, including business meetings, workshops, conferences, discussion groups, and training courses. It is effective across multiple contexts—business, educational, associational, institutional—and can be used in both professional and personal environments. Developed by Fabrizio Faraco, Maieutic Facilitation is grounded in sound scientific principles that enhance understanding of human behavior, interpersonal relationships, communication, decision-making, and conflict management. These principles help groups work productively to achieve their common goals. Facilitators guide organizations and teams to think differently about problems and solutions, leading a collaborative process where stakeholders generate ideas and work together to solve issues.

Why maieutic?

The term “maieutics” comes from the Greek word maieutikos, meaning “midwifery.” In this approach, inspired by the philosophical methods of Socrates, the facilitator acts as a “midwife,” helping participants “give birth” to their own tacit knowledge and insights. Maieutic Facilitation operates on the assumption that the answer is already “in the room,” or, as some say, within the system. The facilitator’s role is not to propose solutions but to initiate a process that enables everyone present to contribute, collaborate, and unlock individual potential—transforming it into collective group knowledge.

Unlike other transformation initiatives—whether digital, agile, or organizational—Maieutic Facilitation’s bottom-up approach is immediately applicable and quickly adopted because of the tangible benefits it delivers: fewer but more effective meetings, actionable and sharable results, and a strong sense of commitment. This commitment arises from the voluntary decision-making process, where participants make choices without external direction. Moreover, you don’t need formal “permission” from the organization. If you consistently produce better results in less time, decision-makers at any level will value and appreciate the outcomes.
